Course Summary

This course comprising three workshops is aimed at helping professional, consulting and graduate engineers to understand essentials of professional practice ethics and law as it applies to engineering in Kenya. The first workshop traces the development of historical, post-independence and current day contexts of engineering practice and education. The second workshop discusses why engineers need to understand regulations and law in the context of engineering practice, followed by an overview of the legal system in Kenya and a detailed description of how the profession of engineering is regulated in Kenya. This includes a discussion on the role of the Engineers Board of Kenya, its functions and powers, licensing categories and the Kenyan code of ethics and conduct for engineers. The final workshop in this course introduces learners to Contract and tort law as it applies to engineering practice. Contract law includes elements of contract law, types of contacts, tender documents, breach of contract, remedies for breach of contract, risk assessment, disputes and uncertainty and dispute resolution. Tort law includes categories of tort and professional negligence. This course comprises of:
